The erotic ballet-cantata Carmina Burana draws its motivation for the action as much from the Latin libretto as it does from the score by Carl Orff. The poems were written by medieval poets, defrocked monks and minstrels, better known for their rioting, gambling and drinking than for their scholarship. By combining lyrics of love, the high spirits of drinking songs, and the spice of the confessional, with the ribald humour of odes to gambling and gluttony, the poetry is defiantly profane and often makes reference to pagan rituals and the rites of spring despite the widespread Christianity of the time.
"For me, dance is the purest form of human poetry. A blending of music, body, mind and soul that has no language barriers. Its communication is direct and immediate. Fanfare celebrates movement through space, while Carmina Burana combines romantic sexuality with movement of sweeping grandeur."
